The Sea Torn Heart
by Mari Ness

Each note she sings digs away
at the chest that holds her skin,
her route back to the cold sea depths,
the rocks and seaweeds and lashing waves.

She sings slowly, so slowly, letting each note linger,
the way an albatross over churning waters
soars to a swiftly setting sun.
